If you have accessed this site you are probably aware of the threat posed to our native Red Squirrel by the mounting numbers of alien Grey in this country. This threat of utter extinction, because of the dangerous virus carried by the Grey, means we must act NOW to halt the invasion of the Grey Squirrel in the North.
At Sinderhope we have found that there are already many people who watch out for, and feed, Red Squirrels. They are also keen to report sightings of Grey Squirrels in order to have them removed. Others in the Allen Valleys are being encouraged to do this too. Small, informal groups are being formed, one person who is ready to pass on information, acting as contact. This helps us to keep informed about the movements of both squirrel species.
I hope you will join us in this project and be prepared to alert us should you have a sighting of a Grey in your area. Do spread this information to others.
Some people have expressed the view that it is already too late to help our indigenous squirrel. I am not of that opinion. This is one of our 'ancient Brits' along with the
hedgehog, pine martin and badger - they deserve all our efforts to save them and their habitats from destruction. Let us not give up on this fight to save our Red Squirrel. Scientists are hoping to develop a contraceptive for use with the Grey - but we hope that we can win time for the Red to develop some sort of resistance to the deadly virus.
